WA Anaesthetic Rotational Training Scheme
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
The Western Australian Rotational Training Program co-ordinates all registrar employment and rotation through teaching hospitals in Western Australia accredited by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). This covers the first two years of basic training and the first two years of advanced training as part of the ANZCA Training Program in anaesthesia. Individual hospitals do not coordinate registrar training in anaesthesia, and enquiries should NOT be directed to individual hospitals.
Positions are usually advertised in the Weekend Australian Newspaper, the Medical Journal of Australia, the West Australian Newspaper, and on the Health Department of Western Australia employment website in early June, with interviews conducted in August each year. Please note that the positions are advertised as part of the WA teaching hospitals combined advertisement for junior medical staff; they are not advertised individually. The selection process is conducted through Human Resources at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital, following WA Public Sector guidelines. All applicants must have Australian citizenship or permanent residency, and have full unconditional registration with the Medical Board of WA.
Although all WA teaching hospital appointments are for 12 month periods, reappointment to the training scheme is automatic subject to annual review of performance, and compliance with the ANZCA regulations for training.
Provisional Fellowship and senior registrar positions are not coordinated by the rotational program. Trainees wishing to organise a fellowship position should apply directly to the Department of Anaesthesia in the hospital they wish to work.
Overseas Medical Practitioners wishing to apply for the program must have passed the Australian Medical Council examinations or equivalent by the time of appointment. The WA anaesthesia rotational training program does not meet the criteria for “area of unmet need” status, and therefore applicants with full unconditional registration with the Medical Board of WA must be given preference. Overseas trained specialists should apply directly to ANZCA for assessment of their qualifications.
All trainees from other regions in Australia and those trainees wishing to return to the program having recently passed exams must formally reapply to the program.
